The mistake you made was that you didn't leave the dark parts dark, you should only modify the color and nothing else. And the case with dark brown eyes is that brown is in itself a pretty dark colour, so if you change it to pink or yellow or blue, it will look too dark, so you may bump up the brightness a bit, and in turn lower the saturation a bit (to avoid the laser glowy eyes). I don't know how much that helped.

Yar, changing iris colour and making it look natural is one of the hardest things to do. There's a few good ones floating around on the interwebz, but I forgot where I saw them.
No way! It's hardly more than sliding a bar (hue- saturation)
