Well, the meaning is somewhat close, but it is certainly not a synonym with "being in love." A crush is something less intense, more fickle, more subdued, and more innocent, if you will. For instance, a middle school student may say she has a crush on her teacher; she probably wouldn't say she's in love with him.

I agree with you that this question is inappropriate, it shouldn’t have been asked, but it’s not that bad either.
