LazyTown celebrates its 30th anniversary at the University Theatre in January and invites children and their families to celebrate with them. Now the veil has been lifted on who will be playing the roles of the classic characters.
According to an announcement from the organizers of the LazyTown Anniversary Festival, which will be held with pomp and pageantry on January 17th and 18th next year, a select group of actors was chosen for the project. They will bring the colorful characters of LazyTown to life in a fresh and exciting way.
A new generation of LazyTown residents
The role of the Sportacus is played by the versatile actor Mikael Kaaber. He is currently playing one of the main roles in the musical Moulin Rouge at the City Theatre and has also acted in television and films.
"He is known for his charm and sincerity as well as being very good at moving, so he fits the role of Sportacus. He will keep the energy and joy at the bottom the whole time at Háskólabíó," says the announcement about Mikael.
Mikael's co-star in Moulin Rouge, Hildur Vala Baldursdóttir, is the new Stephanie. The announcement says that she brings warmth and power to the project and that she will give Stephanie new depth and a lively presence in her interpretation.
The new Robbie Rotten is Almar Blær Sigurjónsson. It is stated that he plays the ever-popular bad guy who is not so bad brilliantly.
“Lazytown in all its glory”
“We want to create a living experience where the children are not just spectators but are part of it and actively participate throughout. They will dance, jump and participate through play and movement in the show,” says Stella Rósenkranz, producer and artistic director of the Lazytown birthday celebration.
“This is Lazytown in all its glory. An updated version for a new generation. We want to put the children in the lead role and bring Lazytown to the stage with the aim of movement and motivation being paramount. This will be a wonderful moment that will be an uplifting and positive experience for the children. We are incredibly proud to introduce the new actors to the show, who all carry the spirit of Lazytown with them - joy, creative play and a positive image. All great role models and a perfect fit for Lazytown - this will be awesome,” says Stella.

Actor Almar Blær Sigurjónsson from Reyðarfjörður has been hired to play Robbie Rotten in the 30th anniversary celebration of LazyTown. Almar Blær says it is a dream role as he grew up with LazyTown.
"LazyTown in the Loftkastalinn was the first play I went to. However, Robbie Rotten had not yet been introduced there."
"I was the first child of young parents and we had few videos. There were two tapes, The Lion King and LazyTown. We didn’t have a video recorder, so on Friday we went out to rent one. Then the tapes were played until Monday. That’s why I can sing along to the songs and move my lips with most of the lyrics," says Almar Blær.
Share a 30th birthday
Almar and LazyTown have one thing in common: they will celebrate their 30th birthday next year. The play premiered in 1996 and LazyTown then toured the world, especially in the form of television series. Stefán Karl Stefánsson, who passed away long before his time, played Robbie Rotten there.
There is an anniversary performance at Háskólabíói in January. That is why a new Sportacus had to be found, which will be Mikael Kaaber, and a new Stephanie, which is Hildur Vala Baldursdóttir, in addition to Robbie.
"The founder, Magnús Scheving, has bought back the rights to LazyTown and intends to breathe new life into it. At the moment, this anniversary show is the only thing that has been decided, but various possibilities are being explored, and that is why I rather hope that the show marks a beginning rather than an end."
"Joining LazyTown, which has a large number of fans all over the world, is a big dream. It is harder to find a more talented actor than Stefán Karl and he created this character in his own unique way, but I trust myself in that task, as I am in a good group."
Robbie Rotten doesn't need to jump into hell
The anniversary celebration will be a kind of movement festival, where the aim is for the children to move with the actors during the show. Robbie Rotten is against exercise and any kind of public health, but is nevertheless quite physically demanding for the actor, apart from the fact that the aim is to perform eight performances over the birthday weekend. "With all this hustle and bustle, it will be demanding, but I don't need to jump into hell like Sportacus."
Almar Blær therefore hopes not to have to be too restrained during Advent and the holidays. "I think there is room in the costume for a little belly – but just a little – it shouldn't spoil the look. We will practice hard over the next few weeks, learn the songs and immerse ourselves in this world, which I think I know after growing up with it. That's why I think I know what I'm getting into."
