Playing old games online (Arcade, N64, SNES, PS1, and others

Firstly, since these systems were not designed for online play, they might appear twitchy and be unresponsive to your controls.

The way to play these games online is using an emulator with Kaillera support. Kaillera is the program that lets you play online, it also has Server method and a P2P method; P2P method requires something separate. Here's a list of emulators with Kaillera support:

http://www.anti3d.com/emulators.php

There should be guides for these programs. However, the only guide I looked up was MAME. :)

I also want to see if anyone's interested in giving this a try. Got this idea when Zafa and I were talking about the Simpson's Arcade game. The first time we played it though, it was unresponsive, we were desynched. It needs a few more tests (Note: Stuff to try: keyframes # and P2P hosting).

Yep, it would be fun. And for anyone willing to do some reading, this is what you need to do:

Download Mame32 Plus Plus v0.119 (10.9Mb) from here:
http://www.kaillera.com/download.php

Now extract it somewhere (usually somewhere with easy access), to another folder is what I recommend. Example name can be: MAME32PP

You will also need to download the rom for the game. This guide will have links and other info that might just help: http://www.geocities.com/mamehelp/

You should download the .zip rom files into the roms folder, using the example above, it would be C:\MAME32PP\roms\ (assuming C: is the drive).

When you open up the program, push F5 to refresh the list so the game can detect what games you have. In the left box, near the top, I recommend clicking on Available so you can see what games you have. There's also a search box near the top middle to make things easier. :)

Alright, to play online with the Server method, go to File and choose Kaillera Netplay.... It will try to access a list of servers, but there's something wrong with the window. Let me show you:

There are 5 buttons on the bottom right of that window, this is what it actually looks like:

For P2P method, follow this link: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?p=4333323 (for this, you need to change to that .dll, go to Options>Kaillera Client Options... and under Use Kaillera client DLL, click on the drop box and choose kailleraclient.dll 0.9)

EDIT: F5 Refresh and Kaillera Server list is a little slow. There are server lists out there. I did find one where we could potentially meet: dfw.daroms.com

Oh, and I just noticed. The .dll at that P2P guide is a little old, use this one instead:
http://www.anti3d.com/downloads.php (Anti3D.com's kailleraclient.dll v1.1)

EDIT 2: Server list here: http://www.anti3d.com/topservers/
Bah, I keep forgetting stuff. You can change the properties of the game you want by right-clicking on it and choosing Properties for [file stuff], not the other properties, I'm not sure what that one does. While playing, Left Alt+Enter makes it go fullscreen. Also while playing, use ESC to close the game and use TAB to config stuff like controls and window stuff. It takes some getting used to.

There might be a way, but I only saw some glimpses of it. It seems to need Xlink Kai though.

Awesome on the Simpsons play, we just need to set it up, probably for the weekend so we got time to mess around with stuff.

I'll be free on Sunday. That is, if Matt, Xizer, and I aren't still in Madison.

I think I'll be free on Sunday too. If I'm not, I'll post here again.
