I get the impression you are around a bunch of people who have never been laid off, been unemployed for any length of time, had a hard time finding a job, been under financial stress etc. and who don't feel their jobs threatened by AI. I consider this an unusual sample. Most people I know both online and in person loathe AI and hope the AI bubble crashes hard and takes the technology down with it. The only people I know who like it are very financially secure, don't see it as threatening that, and see it as their toy.

Further, they have not thought about the societal implications of AI, which are overwhelmingly negative, from young people having AI friends and romantic interests instead of real ones, to academic cheating, to AI slop overwhelming the internet and robbing it of much of its value, to the threat to jobs, human dignity, the tax base, the consumer economy, the constant flood of misinformation and disinformation so that it is harder and harder to know what is true, the undercutting of the creative fields due to stolen content, on and on to the use of AI in warfare, which led to the airstrike that hit that Iranian elementary school and killed many children.

Most people, as the surveys show, have a very negative view of AI. I think that is because they are extremely concerned with the future of their jobs. For most humans, jobs and finances are, along with family, their prime concern. Something which threatens one's financial security is not only easy to resist, but easy to despise. Many no doubt also know the troubling relationship today's youth have with the technology and worry we are raising a generation of people with never-before-seen mental health issues.

That doesn't mean they will never use it if it is free. But that era is coming to an end, the AI companies are bleeding oceans of money and must find a way to monetize AI, or die.

Here's one BRBFBI can relate to more than I can.

Doctors, This Is Why Our Patients Are Using ChatGPT

Written by a doctor no less, who was getting brushed off in typical fashion by his own primary care provider and wanted more time and attention.

It's officially happened; ChatGPT has permeated the class.

I've noticed a few of the other students using AI to do their work weeks ago but said nothing, since It's not my problem (and consequences) to deal with. Today, the teacher asked a very, VERY simple question, and nobody, bar me, could answer and everyone, again, bar me, was made to spend an hour researching the topic. Good, they deserve it.

For context, there are 15-20 students in my class, not including myself, and the question was "What are the five domains of animal welfare?". Mind, we are doing an animal welfare/healthcare course, so the five domains are the de facto thesis. Also, the class has been going since start of April, twice weekly, so we've had AT LEAST 14 classes to learn this. I don't usually shame people for not knowing the answers of the top of their head, but I can't exaggerate just how much the domains have been nailed into us.

And honestly, it's all worrying. Like I said, this is an animal welfare/healthcare course. More than half the class want to be vets/vet nurses, with a few looking at marine biology, reptile keeping, dog training etc. These jobs, relating to animals, are incredibly dangerous as you might imagine. Severe zoonosis, attacks, machine related injures plus more... and that's not mentioning the animals. These people are being trusted with the lives of animals, I really don't think you should take chances there.

To be honest, I don't feel sorry for the other students' punishment. They made their bed, they ley in it. But I'm very concerned about my teacher. She ENCOURAGES AI! She's complicit in all of this, and I worry that her other classes with underage students are using AI. Although, it brings me comfort knowing all the information delivered to us has accessible sources. At least in my class.

Being smarter then everyone in class DOES stroke my ego though, I'll give ChatGPT that lol

We've already seen lawyers and scientists screw up by citing AI-hallucinations as real legal precedent or published studies. It's only a matter of time before a healthcare worker or vet causes a death by following AI advice.

I have some hope that people in those fields are unwilling to use AI, considering the VERY public backlash to lawyers using it.

The thing I'm worried about is people doing stupid shit in their day-to-day life because of AI, think DIY car fixing, electrical work etc. People are stupid enough as it is, we don't need people seriously hurting themselves because "ChatGTP told me I dont need a harness to fix my roofs' tiles!"

The medical people are already using it here. They record and transcribe every patient-provider encounter and it shows up in the patient portal as clinical notes as if the provider wrote them. I have read some of them and they often contain inaccuracies.

Here's what it says at the start of every clinical note now:

"The patient has given verbal consent to the use the Nuance DAX copilot tool to record our conversation for clinical documentation and quality improvement purposes."

                Meanwhile

Florida is suing OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, alleging they know ChatGPT is not safe, especially for minors.

The state becomes the first to sue OpenAI over the alleged dangers of its product.

“Sam Altman and ChatGPT have chosen the AI race over the safety and security of our kids. They have chosen profit over public safety, and we’re not going to stand for it here in Florida,” Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said at a press conference on Monday.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday in Florida’s tenth circuit, accuses OpenAI of deceptive and unfair trade practices, negligence and violating product liability laws. It also seeks to hold Altman “personally liable for the harm he has caused Floridians,” including his alleged “utter disregard for the risk to human life caused by his firms’ conduct.”

The lawsuit lists a litany of accusations against ChatGPT, including helping mass shooters, encouraging suicide, causing “public humiliation,” getting minors addicted to a tool with “no parental oversight” and causing users to lose “critical thinking skills.”

Those Cal University students are no doubt paying thousends upon thousends for a proper education, and this is how they treat their students? For shame. Not to mention the teachers put under the crunch

Also, big cheers to Florida for suing. The whole "AI pretending to be doctors" is absolutly true, I've seen whole TikTok accounts dedicated to that, usually with tens of millions of views! So stupid

It's not like OpenAI is being subtle about it.

We’re introducing ChatGPT Health, a dedicated experience that securely brings your health information and ChatGPT’s intelligence together, to help you feel more informed, prepared, and confident navigating your health.

Health is already one of the most common ways people use ChatGPT, with hundreds of millions of people asking health and wellness questions each week. ChatGPT Health builds on the strong privacy, security, and data controls across ChatGPT with additional, layered protections designed specifically for health— including purpose-built encryption and isolation to keep health conversations protected and compartmentalized. You can securely connect medical records and wellness apps to ground conversations in your own health information, so responses are more relevant and useful to you. Designed in close collaboration with physicians, ChatGPT Health helps people take a more active role in understanding and managing their health and wellness—while supporting, not replacing, care from clinicians.

All AI companies are hemorrhaging money, the only ones profiting are the hardware manufacturers and maybe the people using the AI. Once AI companies start increasing their prices to actually cover their costs, AI will become prohibitively expensive to everyone using it. I still have some hope AI isn't long for this world.

Anyway that is interesting, but those figures seem low for the Ai companies.

OpenAI is carrying roughly $100bn in debt, and that burden is on investors funding their ecosystem and needs, including its push for data centre infrastructure.

                              https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/20...-mounting-debt

and that's from March. That's about twice as much as shown in the chart above.

OpenAI is private, like Anthropic etc so their books are not public yet. Once they have their IPO's and become public companies, which is soon, all this will be a lot more transparent.

The real crushing thing is their near future obligations are enormous. From that article:

In November, HSBC forecast that despite a growing user base, OpenAI’s compute power obligations will total $1.4 trillion by 2033. OpenAI later clarified it would be closer to $600bn by 2030, but just the rental space for all those data centres, for instance, will cost $620bn, analysts point out.

“OpenAI needs to generate $200bn in annual revenue by 2030 to justify their projections. That’s 15x growth in five years while costs keep exploding,” George Noble, a veteran financial analyst,
said in a post on X.

“The diminishing returns are becoming impossible to hide. Competitors are catching up. The lawsuits are piling up,” Noble added.
