I remember Zafa's sites being the first ones I viewed.
I really liked this GIF where someone pirated LazyTown on DVD to YAAP (YouAreAPirate).

Yeah same here took me a while so many years ago to get the gist of the site. Even took me a while to get around to making an account and try my hand at it.
Let's just say a bunch of my early stuff was crapish as well. Trying to fit in until I found my own voice and style. All while using only the programs I knew about at the time.
Photoshop, premiere pro (video) and of course and the gif making program at that time Image ready. Which was eventually phased out by Adobe. Then I learned of the Adobe suite and
Jasc animation shop 3 (which was released in 2003 which became abandonware not long after). Even though it's 20 years old now, it still holds up and is a good gif making program. Even better than Image ready was. Most of the tools I've used for the past decade or longer are Adobe Auditions for the audio, Photoshop (of course) for prepping the images, After Effects for creating the overall composition exporting as frames. Then Jasc is fired up to create the gif out of those frames.

Number 1 rule though for making sites, like memes, is that it cannot be forced. Even then, some sites work and some don't.
