Looking at the script, I think the first mention of the seaplanes for Japan is "To cover the area, we will launch scout planes from Akagi and Kaga, and our cruiser escorts will launch 5 seaplanes." Later they revisit the Tone's catapult problem, and show the Japanese aircrew in that plane when it finally is over the US fleet.
