I was reading something the other day, and it said that at one time, Denmark partly owned Iceland - before it got its independance in 1944. So, the question in that interview could have referred to "ties to Denmark" in that way (possibly whether ot not Magnus' parents were of Danish heritage or not, considering that fact).
Also, in the same book (looking further), it said something very interesting about how Icelandic culture developed. Hundreds of years ago, many people of both Celtic and Scandinavian heritage moved to Iceland, and blended their own individual cultures and languages, making it into what we know today as "Icelandic". So really, Iceland IS its own culture...just derived from a few various others. That could be something else that ties into the whole Denmark thing...
However, I could be wrong... :| It was only a thought.
