For the collection
My response seems to have derailed this thread. I did not mean to imply there was anything wrong with watching episodes. This is a LT fan site lol. Watching episodes is the whole point. Well, at least for most people.
I probably haven't watched a full episode since 2008. Thus my embarrassment. The face I chose to express this, obviously missed the mark.
It is a personal issue. I have never really been into watching TV. I prefer active participation such as reading a book, using the internet (but not watching videos) or playing a board game or computer game. I particularly have avoided TV because I detest ads. I also think the quality of most TV shows is usually quite poor, and in recent years, a lot of it is rather violent and depraved. I have tried watching some shows, like The Witcher or Carnival Row, and stopped watching because of unnecessary violence and gore, and I avoid shows like Game of Thrones entirely because of its reputation for actions involving cruelty and torture.
In my current apartment, cable TV comes with the rent, and I have never bothered to even get it set up after years of living here, that tells you how much I have no interest in TV. Yes I have "free" cable TV and haven't even gotten them to install the cable box.
At one point I got into home theater and I have a large collection of movies and TV show DVDs (no ads, and only for my favorite shows). But I don't even watch those much anymore. I watch things with my girlfriend as a social activity, but when by myself, almost never.
Often I will say the next line of dialog before the characters say it, for a show or movie I have never seen before. I can often predict exactly what they are going to say, I feel like I could write the scripts myself. I know what has come before and influenced the script writers, and whether they realize it or not, they are parroting previous works. For something like Rings of Power it is annoying how often I know what the characters will say before they say it. I highly prize novelty and watching something that is not a remake, reboot, rehash, ripoff, clone, derivative work, or fan service. Original works are very hard to find nowadays, studios don't want to take risks.
LazyTown for me was never about the show. It was about Julianna's portrayal of Stephanie. I was utterly charmed and became somewhat obsessed with this character; she became my muse for various creative activities. I do not watch any other children's shows, do not have or want children myself, and do not even know any children. Julianna has charisma, a magnetism that is truly rare. She is fun to watch in the way a puppy is fun to watch, it makes you smile and is hard to look away. The cuteness, energy and positivity is entirely different from what surrounds me every day. The show is good, I think Robbie is an excellent supporting character, and I like the music, but without Steph, I never would have given the show a second thought.
I am as interested in seeing someone else play Stephanie as I would be in seeing someone else play Robbie, or Captain Kirk or Indiana Jones, which is to say, not at all.
When it comes to LazyTown most people don't realize that most of the episodes were not readily available in decent quality (DVD quality) back in the day. I bought all the DVDs to get the episodes I could. But it was because I wanted the high quality sources for images and sounds. I went through all those episodes frame by frame looking for screencaps, which back then, were also few and far between because most people did not have the source material. My LT activities were making YTMNDs, photoshops, taking screencaps and making gifs, chatting in the #stephers IRC chat, and of course making Stephers.net. All active activities (sounds redundant). I went through those eps with a fine tooth comb, not to watch them passively, but actively looking for material for good screencaps and gifs. The screencaps I made were often ones no one had seen before, and others used them to make photoshops.
In recent decades I think the internet, with its constant offers of content and demands to monitor my email etc has degraded my attention span. I am someone who prefers the 11 hour version of Lord of the Rings, the longer the better if something is good. I have often played board games that take 12 hours, or more than 100 hours for the big wargames. But I haven't watched Lord of the Rings in a long time because I now find it hard to just sit still that long without doing something active. It's strange because I have the free time, but increasingly, it is harder and harder for me to just sit there and watch something. I get antsy. Yet at work I am prized for my focus and attention to detail. But working is an active activity. I do poorly with video training and demonstrations, I have to go back and rewind, pause, etc the video many times later to take notes because passive watching and listening does not tend to "stick" and my attention wanders easily when I am not actively involved.
I think part of my drop off in watching movies and shows on DVD is due to how I have lived in recent years. I sit in a rocker recliner which has my computer next to it, with a keyboard on a board across the arms of the chair, so I can sit here comfortably and use the computer. I can also watch the TV, which is across the room. And I can look out my sliding glass door at the lake and sky outside. And I can rock all the time, which is something I've always liked to do. I live in this chair. But that means anytime I am watching the TV, the computer is right next to me and easily accessible. The TV tends to lose out on the tug of war on my attention. I used computers a lot less when it meant having to go sit at a table or desk and use it exclusively. Now I can eat, watch TV, use the computer, read etc all from this one chair.
If I had a bigger apartment, in light of my experience, I would move the computer to a separate desk or table so I had to go sit there to use it, in a less comfortable chair, and just use this recliner for eating, watching TV, and reading. But my apartment is too small - that space is reserved for my board gaming table. Saving money nowadays is more important than ever so I live in "cramped U-boat" conditions where there is stuff everywhere and often I can't get to something without moving other things out of the way first. It would be nice to be wealthy and have a bigger place, I used to have a lot more room when rents were a lot cheaper and apartments were built a lot bigger. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I have withdrawn from active participation on most forums to cut down on the amount of time I spend checking for activity and writing posts like this, but I tend to end up computer gaming instead, which, frankly, isn't much of an improvement.
All of this is a long winded way of saying, I just don't tend to watch stuff. I never really did to begin with, and the tendency has gotten much stronger in recent years. So yeah it's embarrassing on a fan community to admit you don't watch the show lol. But maybe this will inspire me to start watching it.
I once dated a woman who was on the board of directors for The Kerouac Project. They interview writers and handle having them come and stay for two months at the Jack Kerouac house, a historical location where this Beat writer once lived and wrote the novel The Dharma Bums, so the writers could produce creative works in an inspiring location. Having read a number of Beat works, including by Kerouac, I engaged her in conversation once about On the Road, his most famous novel. It quickly became clear she had not read it. In fact she had not read any Kerouac whatsoever.
