ITT we discuss Miss South Carolina's brilliance

Q: Recent polls have shown a fifth of americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Miss South Carolina: I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because ah some people out there in our nation dont have maps, and uh I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everwhere like such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here, in the U.S. should help the U.S. err should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for our...

A.C. Slater: Thank you very much, South carolina.

Hmm. The words 'box of rocks' come to mind. Yet she made the top 5.

God, if I was feeling suspicious I might think that these girls are deliberately selected not just for good looks, but for a comination of good looks and stupidity, to strengthen the notion that pretty girls are usually dumb. In fact, I'm not all that impressed with some of them, so stupidity might even be more important than looks.

Also, I very much doubt that 1/5th of americans can't find the US on a world map. I really do, I'd have to personally ask a couple thousand random americans to point the US out for me, because I wouldn't believe it from any source, no matter how official, unless I saw it with my own eyes.

I can easily believe that 20% of Americans cannot find the location of their country on a world map. Assuming the map was completely unlabeled and no borders were drawn on it, I find this believable enough.

You live in the Netherlands. You are not used to being surrounded by so many ignorant people. As an American, I can tell you from experience that the majority of our populace is lacking in intelligence.

I mean, is it that hard to believe that 20% of Americans can't find their own country on a map when 33% of Americans still support the way George Bush is running the country? (that's from his most recent approval ratings poll by the way)

If the USA was a small place in the middle of a big continent, then maybe. And don't tell me I'm not usd to ignorant people either. We have lots of immigrants here

Just when I thought people couldn't get any stupider. I can only hope the sample in that survey was biased to be particularly stupid.

Honestly, it's not that hard. I thought the distinctive shape of Florida would tip people off as to where the southeast corner is, and then they could visualize the map in their heads (it's shown on the news and in textbooks enough) to figure out where the rest was.

I wonder how many of them can name at least three candidates in the upcoming presidential election. I bet it's not more than thirty percent.

Stupid people tend to procreate at a higher rate than non-stupid people. Stupid people who procreate receive government benefits such as welfare and food stamps, encouraging their behavior. The offspring continue the legacy of stupid. Thus, there are a lot of stupid people in this country. Solution? Make sure your stupid people are spayed or neutered.

Or a basic government knowledge test to vote-but that would be discrimination, of course.

In our civics class last year, we had to take a sample of the citizenship test that legal immigrants take. They are required to know some basic things about the country's history, the working of the government system, and some important laws. Most natives wouldn't be able to pass the test if they were required to take it, would they?

Btw, why is it important to know who wrote the star-spangled banner? Wouldn't knowing the lyrics be more important?

Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner...the words, anyway.

He was related to and named after F. Scott Fitzgerald, too.
