It's not as if they're mutually exclusive. The navy of the time was associated with "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash", I don't see why less respectable pirates would have any less buttsex.

True, but of course "gay pride" didn't really come about until the '60s or so. I don't many pirates painted their ships pink and sailed rainbow flags.

Modern-day pirates may be a different story, however.

I seem to recall hearing about a 'sodomy' legalisation movement in pre-Nazi Germany, and I think they wanted gay marriage too. But, yes, modern-style gay pride is extremely anachronistic for the time period one normally thinks about in regards to pirates. Of course, now I'm imagining the 'Black Pearl' in pink, with a rainbow Jolly Roger.

Kallikak might have been, but do you really think I'd use it as an insult? I was, if not precisely serious, joking in a way that had nothing to do with insults.

I'd do the Pink Pearl as well, but getting dark bits of photos pale without losing all the shading and stuff is a bitch -- I tried to give Lal (Data's daughter from one ep of ST:TNG) pink hair because somebody in a thread at the LJ comm metaquotes noticed Lal and Steph had the same haircut, but it was just too dark to work right with the skills I had and time I was willing to spend. I ended up pasting Steph's hair over hers, which, because the joke is they have the same haircut, still works for me.

You did a good job. Do you have a higher resolution pic, or were you just making the avatar?

That's the best I had. Since Lal's hair isn't exactly the same as Steph's, and she's an obscure one-ep character, I needed a front-on shot (because 3/4 face and side-on show that her hair is a bit shorter at the front) with Data in it (to give her context). I couldn't find one, so I saved a fanvid from YouTube and screen-capped a shot that worked, even though that gave me a rather small starting pic.
