    The Nindan thread! (and lost4ever)

As I'm sure most of you all know, California is pretty much on fire. Nindanjoe, lost4ever and I'm sure alot of other friends live there. I just figured it'd be appropriate if we just expressed out hopes and such to them! If you don't want to... then you suck, you big meany!

So here's hoping that everything works out for the best you guys! I hope your families are safe and sound and that you're blessed despite this ordeal. You have my many prayers.

I think nindan got trapped in the fire.

I haven't seen him in days.

The fires have been burning since Saturday, fueled by heat and high winds (70mph gusts in some places)
Nindanjoe and others South of where I am are worse off than here. Ventura County where I live has been protected by recent burns over the summer so there is less to burn. The fires near me are either out or under control and we are currently sending more of our resources to fight the bigger fires. The winds have calmed somewhat but shifting winds are predicted for this afternoon which will make the fires unpredictable.

I hope for the best for Nindan and anyone else in the hard hit areas.

for anyone interested in keeping track here's the link to the MODIS maps:

Good luck everybody, I know* it's damn scary.

And not to miss any of us out, isn't Mexicali right on the California/Baja California border? I haven't heard anything about the fires spreading into Mexico, but the fire maps thing Lost4ever linked shows some fires across the border.

                  * I was living in Canberra during the '03 fires there. My suburb, in Eastern Tuggeranong, never came under direct threat, but the fire came within 5km, and my dad's girlfriend's suburb did actually burn down.

Re: The Nindan thread! (and lost4ever)

My understanding is that the fires in/near Mexico are not creating an immediate threat at this time, but there are federal fire crews on site.

I couldn't resist posting this. It's a video of a new DC10 fire tanker in action on the fires here. I saw this plane in action on Monday and it's really impressive to see a huge plane like this only a few hundred feet from the ground. It can lay down a mile long strip of fire retardant. It has been credited with saving one of the towns here on it's own.

                    Here's the news video:http://video.knbc.com/player/?id=170479

I'm hoping to get some video from the ground when our fire crews return.

I saw a few airplanes on the news while they were doing their thing, it was pretty cool. A few months ago I saw an episode of one of Huell Howser's shows that had the perspective from inside of one of these planes. Pretty cool. I live in the Los Angeles area, so only the smoke and heat came about.
