Basically what this means is that work on nearly all TV shows and movies will stop tomorrow and be on hiatus for the duration of the strike.
The late night comedy shows (ex. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report) are the first victims, they cannot produce new episodes for the duration of the strike. Ongoing dramas will be next, as soon as their existing scripts run out. The Heroes spinoff has already been cancelled because of this. There will also be a delay in movie production, but the effect will be delayed because there are a plethora of movies already scripted and being shot waiting in the wings.
If this strike outlasts the existing wells of episodes waiting to air (I hope not, but the previous strike in the 80s lasted five months), we'll have no new material on TV except the news and reality shows (since those are unscripted and don't require writers).
Does anyone know if the Writers Guild includes the writers for animated shows, like Nick Jr.'s lineup? Because if it does, and the strike lasts a while, maybe Nick Jr. USA will run out of new Dora to show, and they'll be forced to air a show with existing unaired episodes....like maybe LazyTown!</wishful thinking>
