    Christmas: The debate

In order not to muck up that other thread I guess this as good a thread to continue the debate over this Christmas issue.

Hmmm, and how does one quantify this celebration as being celebrated "properly" since it was a celebration already in existence a few thousand years before "Jesus was born". In order to entice the pagans to Christianity, they blended their celebration with the pagan one. Thereby, there was no need for a pagan to adopt different celebratory dates and their conversion was easy and mess free. Christmas celebration has changed through the years even since then. To me in those respects if you want to celebrate "Christmas" the proper way is to celebrate it the way the pagans meant it to be celebrated.

It has changed through the years and will do so into the future. I really see no reason to get the knickers up in a bunch over it. Just go forth and be happy.

I'm a Christian, but if I were not I'd be a pagan as paganism is the next closest religion to my beliefs. I suggest people celebrate Christmas in their religion's traditional way, Christian or pagan.

      Ah... here goes nothing...

Well, boredjedi, what you're saying is 100% truth. Yes, Jesus was born around the Spring time and pretty much everything in Christmas is... well, pagan. I remember when my pastor told me about this stuff... I cried so hard because I just didn't understand how or why I hadn't been told the 100% truth. And, to be honest, there are lots of things in Christianity that are also pagan worship. That's the kinda stuff I try to steer away from, and I don't even talk about it really because it offends people very badly. No one wants to hear that the things they've been practicing were pagan! It hurts... it makes you feel very unsure about things. Anyone who wants to learn more should REALLY read 'Come Out of Her, My People' by C.J. Koster http://www.amazon.com/Come-Out-Her-M.../dp/0620201444

Now, there's nothing pagan about God Himself! God is... God! He's cool like that!

I find that most people of faith who get upset or offended are insecure about their faith. Well that applies to other areas of life as well. Such as homophobes being insecure about their own sexuality etc...

Pagan is more a classification of some religions rather than being a religion itself.

Christmas isn't a celebration of the day of Christ's birth, it is the celebration of the birth itself. It shouldn't matter when it is celebrated.

Just because something changes, doesn't mean it does for the right reasons.

Sorry, should have been more specific. I meant Nordic paganism (Wotan/Odin, Thor, etc.) though greco-roman paganism has its appeals as well...

Sad really that people have forgotten nowadays on how to have a good debate without getting personal and emotional about it.

I was browsing for pressies, and thought Dawnstar! (you sweet girl), CmdrLuke! (you ?) - guys, check this out...

She looks like any other dashboard Madonna. But the Virgin Mary, as ever, is on the move. She now plugs into your computer and keeps a motherly eye on your files, emails, photos, MP3s, movies... you name it, and she safeguards it.

If you need to transport your digital stuff in absolute safety, who better to go to than the one who "treasured all these things in her heart" (Luke 2:51)?
Simply plug the new Maria USB memory stick into your laptop, and her sacred heart suddenly flickers into life with little red flashing heartbeats, reassuring you that your files are in safe hands.

Around her halo are the words of that traditional prayer: "Oh Maria keep my data safe."

No one has yet reported seeing their Maria Memory Stick actually weeping, but it can only be a matter of time.
Buy yours today and put data loss misery behind you for ever. The 512Mb Maria will cost you 69 Euros.

Christmas is about sitting in the Pumpkin Patch waiting for the The Great Pumpkin. The Great Pumpkin then flies through the air to deliver toys to all the good little children in the world.

                              Rockband is awesome!
