I get the feeling it's going to be nothing like the series, like so many films "based on" old cartoons.

I get the feeling it's going to be nothing like the series, like so many films "based on" old cartoons.

From what I have seen so far it take a very stylized approach that has the same flavor of the original series. I think the Wachowski brothers are pretty creative in their approach to the subject matter. With their background in comic books they have a creative viewpoint that many others in film do not have. Whether or not it is true to the original it should be good I think.

But unless it is gonna be true to the series, I'd prefer it if they went with original characters/designs etc. than to use the name.
In my opinion, it would be better to make an original film that's half Speed Racer-esque as an homage than to make a Speed Racer film that's only half Speed Racer-esque as a cash-in, you dig?

Yes you do have a good point there. I do get tired of movies that cash in on the name and have little to do with the original story.

From the trailer I have seen of Speed Racer I don't think this will be the case. The style looks good, the casting is spot on, although I think John Goodman should have watched more of the series, his acting as Pops is not animated enough, he's too mellow for the role. But of course, this all remains to be seen, as happens in so many movies the trailer could be the best part.

Oh wow - looking at that picture gave me serious flashbacks to my childhood, sitting on the floor cross legged in front of a tiny TV.

I hope they do a decent job of the movie, "Thunderbirds" and "Lost in space" were good movies on their own but had nothing to do with the original TV series whatsoever.

Well, that's the thing, isn't it?

Speed Racer was made primarily for a young Japanese television audience in the 60s.
This film will be targeted towards today's western cinema-going audience, and they'll probably go for as broad an age range as they can.

It'll be difficult to get something that fits those criteria whilst staying true to the original.
Not that it's not possible, but it'll be difficult.

That screenshot shows part of the reason I DO like it. I think it captures the style of the original series quite well. I think you should take a second look ooozie.
