Asian here is generally used to refer to people from the Indian subcontinent. I went to a school where about 33% were of Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi heritage, and I got used to their mannerisms. "Asian" in the American sense means Chinese and other Far Eastern people, while in the UK we just say "Chinese", even if they're Japanese, Korean and whatnot.
