    Music

Before you try to move this topic to the 'media' part of the forum, please note that this is a more philosophical topic that I believe belongs here.

Post your favourite genre of music but make sure you try to explain why you like it. What is it about that genre that makes it so good and precedes the other genres?

I'll post some of mine if this topic goes down well.

Hmm.....I really want to contribute to this thread, but I can't really come up with any deep meaningful reasons as to why I like the music that I like. Basically, I like music that makes me happy or excited...or both. I could probably give you much better answers as to why I dislike the music that I dislike.

      Re: Music

Really, I think you're looking for an abstract definition of "good" music here.

I define good music as that which is developed with technical skill on the part of the artist, NOT the producer or engineer. Good production values make a strong song better, but can't save one that sucked ass to begin with. Which is why I hate most pop. Additionally, good music should be created with knowledge of the music that preceded it. Bonus points for originality.

These are the only two real criteria I have. They're kind of the same criteria I apply to all art. Of course, in art there are no real rules, so even these have exceptions. Which is why I like punk rock. Not sure why I like punk and despise pop, though. Probably because punk was created with the expressed purpose of being stripped-down and basic. Essentially, punks acknowledge their music is shit. But it's fun shit. Pop artists think they're actually talented.

So basically, I like music made by smart people. Yeah, that's what makes good music. When you're smart.

I like punk, and I like pop. I don't pay much attention to how or why the music was made, all I know is that if it sounds good to me, I like it.

            @Sleepwalker

If you like to hear Norwegian black metal with talented artist, you should listen to this. The artist (one man band) was convicted of borth murder and burnings of several historic churches, and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. He is released today on parole. He has composed everything himself about one year before he stabbed and used matchbox. It's all composed with hate, both music and lyrics. Think norwegians are famous composers of black metal out there. Still a bit too emo for my taste

"Burzum" sounds a bit random but when we talk about music and especially about norwegian music don't forget about "Glittertind" (Punk/Metal) and "Dimmu Borgir" (Black Metal/industrial)...they are awesome...and that's also the music styles which I prefer (all kind of punk and metal...also metalcore) but pls don't ask why...dunno...my taste of music is really mystic because sometimes I need to use mainstream like "Aqua" or J-Pop....

Glittertind, must have missed that band. It remind about "Storm", that you may heard about. Dimmu Borgir is a bit similiar to Nightwish, that is great music. You know about Sirenia or is it too "slow" drumming?

I love metal, hell, I can still consider myself a metalhead (although I'm not a fundie metalhead any more lol).
But I have to say, I don't like black metal. I even like Florida Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, SIx Feet Under, Obituary etcetcetc).I just don't like black metal, or blackened death/thrash. The reasones are these: it's not melodic enough (meaning it has removed guitar solos, which sets black metal apart from death/thrash metal), and the lyrics are way to religious-satanistic for my secular metal/christian tastes.

Musi is one of the building blocks of my life philosophy (yes, I have that).

I like many kinds of rock music because it's the best produced modern-teen music, and it's rebelious at the same time...and I love the sound of it. My fav is thrash, I also like death metal (especialy floridian), heavy-metal, modern rock and roll, oi punk, hardcore punk and many many more.

I like romanian folklore music, folk-rock and folk-metal, because it represents my national-cultural identity. I also love most european folklore music, especialy celtic.

I reacently got into catholic and orthodox coral church music a lot...I think it's calming, and as a christian, why shouldn't I like it's theme?! However, I also like musulim music, even if I usualy hate oriental-sounding music, which makes it weird....also budist/shinto/taoist/confucianist music.

                        Stingy, that is brilliant.

I should note that I like some pop, despite myself. People should do just what you're doing: listen to what makes them happy. In choosing music for myself, though, I am a judgmental, musically elitist bastard.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I don't really like metal. Just not my thing.

What do you mean with 'hardcore'. Is it with guitars or music like happy hardcore, there is some confusion about that. Some metal bands call there music hardcore but that doesn't make sense. Maybe we just need to call it techno and metal, and leave the hardcore alone for the pervers, you know what I'm saying
