I use media player classic (MPC) from the guliverkli project over at sf.net. If you press Ctrl+7 the playlist pops up, here you can drag files in or entire folders. You can then save the playlist if you wish. It also has a shuffle/random function which is cool. I often end up loading all my favourite samples from ytmnd and listen to that.

The mpc2kxp6490.zip file is for win 2k and win xp, that's probably what you want.

Edit: Most importantly it's a standalone player, no installer, no registry keys. Oh and I think the latest version has DeCSS (aka region free dvd player), although VLC is much better at DVDs than MPC.

Use WinAmp, it has a built-in PlayList editor -- Much easier to use than anything else IMO. Plays videos and everything too.

Dunno, I've never really liked iTunes. It takes up alot more space and memory than WinAmp :/

Umm, don't you play Oblivion Ed?

You must have a Gig of RAM then huh?

If so the 40MBs of RAM iTunes uses should not really bother you.
Infact I have itunes and 5-6 firefox tabs going and a bunch of nVidia software running and I never get over 500MBs.
Don't be stingy iTunes is my baby.

There's a great way to handle this, actually. Use WinAmp. Go to...

              Options->Preferences->Media Library->Local Media

Add the folder with the album you want to the list. (Actually, add all the folders where you keep music.) Then click rescan now and reboot WinAmp. You'll now how a full list of all the music in whatever folders you picked that you can play in order, shuffled, whatever you like.

I like to be as conservative as possible. I mean, why use 40MB of RAM when you can use 10?

Hell yeah. I use iTunes to rip music (because I'm too lazy to learn to rip it with other programs.) but I use WinAmp for all the actual playing. iTunes is an incredibly bloated and slow application. :|

Its never been slow for me when I use it.

It takes a sec to start up, like 3 or 4 but really whats 3 or 4 seconds.

I used winamp for awhile, but I just did not like it for some reason. I had it last week to retry it and I could not get back into it haha.

I guess its the same for people that use winamp.

I suppose if you are used to the load delay that's fair enough.

So I guess you won’t be switching to vista for a while :p

I agree though, a media player is supposed to run quietly(well…) in the background and leave as much of the system’s resources as possible to the foreground applications.
