No, it's a normal smiley. When I started with an online community in late 96 everybody was using o's for noses, I didn't see the hyphen become popular (at least with people I talked to) until a few years later.

Also, I would think a clown would have a larger nose. I remember back in the day when I would accidentally hold shift too long and do this --> :O) I would go "aah! I have an inflatable nose!" or something like that :o).
