And I know a few guys like that, except over here they're the kind of guys who will only drink real ale and would never dream of touching anything as common and unsophisticated as lager.

I dunno if it's the same elsewhere, but here we have local breweries for every region, and these guys travel the country trying out every ale that each brewery produces, and of course keeping notes in their little books.
