Everyone has to die some day.

Cancer is one of the ways to ensure that.

Personally, we should be thankful that we live past the age of forty, which is pretty much our natural life expectancy.

I just realised my rant about idiots and the public ban could've been misread.

I obviously didn't mean you, Dawn, as you had to live with it so you had no choice.
But that was your home and not a public place, so I wasn't talking about that.

Sorry for any offence I may have caused to you, or anyone else reading this who had the same circumstances.

But the rest of you are all ****ing idiots.

I do endorse the ****ing of idiots.

Aw, I wasn't offended at all myself! I pretty much had a good idea of what you were saying. No harm done in this direction

I think the general idea about banning smoking is eventually people will become adapted to the new conditions to the point that if new conditions are consisently being created, smoking will soon die out. An outright ban of smoking would cause nothing short of outrage.

My dad smokes alot. I'd say... a pack a day. Growing up, he always smoked around us, and after awhile, me and my brothers all got asthma. The doctor said it was due to second hand smoke. I don't have it so bad, but my youngest brother can't even play football without his inhaler. After Vince was sent to the ER for an attack that nearly killed him, my dad started at least smoking outside. My dad, on the other hand, has emphysema (which he got from smoking). He's get's pretty sick and he can hardly play with the dogs anymore :(

Sure, cigs do more harm for some than it does for others. A good point though is that... what harm could possibly come from quitting? It's not healthy at all. There are too many risk involved, too many carcinogens too. Do you really wanna take that risk on getting cancer one day? If it gets bad enough, you just might die. The risk is just too great. So... just try at least! If not for yourself, think of the people that will miss you if you one day got cancer and died.
I'll hit on the last bit first. That was the whole point of me taking up smoking. Killing myself without actually looking like I was killing myself. What a myth that was and is. Damn things have done nothing to me.

Sorry to hear about that other stuff though.

I did see a report that even though smoking is way way down, asthma is rising ever higher. Strange that I'd say. I'm not going to argue about the cig thing but there's no way to tell if other environmental factors are at play here. But instead of doctor's looking harder for other causes they stop when someone says they smoke or exposed to smoke meanwhile the real culprits remain unchecked. That pisses me off than anything. Years before I smoked when I got my tumor, the first question they asked me was do I smoke. I said no and you know what they did? Nothing, no other questions they just chalked it down to an anomaly. Yeah an anomaly alright like these so called experts.

                This is true.

Which reminds me of a line from the South Park episode "Butt Out".
"Health warnings are all over the packets these days. People know the risks of smoking, and yet they still choose to do so." (paraphrased)

It's all down to freedom of choice again.
I know I may be slowly killing myself. That's my decision to make, not yours.
                **** you, "the man"!

In other news, all of this debate is really making me want a cigarette.

I've always thought that, but of course the problem is that smokers can possibly be slowly killing other people as well, which is quite a hazard.

This is also true, but it is usually their own fault.

Well, the way I see it, even if it's not guaranteed that smoking is bad for you(even though it's safe to assume so), it certainly won't improve your health so it's not worth the risk. To me anyway. If others want to smoke then hooray for them, but I don't want to be exposed to it in public areas. And I'd say that your right to smoke is inferior to my right not to inhale your crap. Similar to how people may blow out their eardrums with loud music as long as it doesn't bother others.

Oy what a long day. Did my first test this morning. A Doppler of the carotid arteries. She said two to three days my doctor will receive the results.

                          I respect that.
                          I agree with that.

But there are/were a lot more non-smoking places than smoking-permissive places around.
You know the risks, you have the choices, you make your own decision.

You might as well say "I have a right to stand in the middle of a railway track and not get hit by a train."
                          No, you don't.

If you go out of your way to stick your dick in a mouse trap, don't blame me if it snaps on you.

Well, railways are made for trains to be on. So that comparison would only work if i demanded a smoke-free smoking club. It doesnt work for malls, train stations, museums, or any other public place that's not designed specifically for smoking.

Okay, maybe that comparison was a bit of an exaggeration. :)
I agree that malls, train stations, museums, libraries and the like where they are few and far-between should be kept smoke-free, but they have been for years anyway.

There is nothing to be gained from completely banning smoking in every single public building in the country (or the world, as it seems to be going).
As I said, as long as it is clearly marked which buildings allow smoking and which don't, there should be no problem in them co-existing peacefully.

I don't want to have to bring up free will again, but that is really what it all boils down to.
                              Apparently, it's a bad thing.

No, but the theorem of the possibility of a rotating universe proves it to be impossible!
Don't worry, as long as you're in THIS universe you won't be able to tell the difference. If you could, philosophy would be helluva lot more boring, and seeing as it already is that'd be a bad thing indeed.
