Very interesting, I just had a look at aussie charts and it's the same story... I also noticed that the Aussie and American charts share more songs, old charts had more local bands (I'm guessing the internet is to blame)

Yeah the internet but mostly technology which was covered in the clip. Very easy to make music in your own bedroom. Don't need a studio or corporate label contracts etc....

Used to listen to this weekly show on NPR. They don't carry it around here. It's been on since 1983. Sometimes you hear some really cool music.

The full song. This is one of the very few places where it is mentioned that Dwarves use magic. Note the words "enchanted" and "spells"

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
To seek our pale enchanted gold

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep
In hollow halls beneath the fells

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword

                      On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars on crowns they hung
                      The dragon-fire in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day
                      To claim our long-forgotten gold

Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold, where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves

The pines were roaring on the heights
The winds was moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale
The dragon's ire, more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail

The mountain smoked beneath the moon
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day
To win our harps and gold from him

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old

I was going to post the soundtrack version.
It's actually slightly different than the song heard
                          in the movie.

The wind was on the withered heath
But in the forest stirred no leaf
There shadows lay be night or day
And dark things silent crept beneath

The wind came down from mountains cold
And like a tide it roared and rolled
The branches groaned, the forest moaned
And leaves were laid upon the mould

I know about it from WW2 games, where the Soviets attacked Finland in the Winter War of 1939-40 and annexed Karelia, the most fertile part of Finland and a buffer area around Leningrad (now St. Petersburg again). It's the reason the Finns joined the Germans when the Germans invaded the USSR a year later. But the USSR won and Russia still controls Karelia.

France and Britain were on the verge of invading Norway to send expeditionary forces to help the Finns when the war ended. This was a part of a series of Soviet land grabs like the invasion and carving up of Poland with Germany, the seizure of Bessarabia from Rumania, and the conquest of the Baltic states Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
