I still haven't formatted that third M.2, it was the freebie I got that was mislabeled as 500GB but is actually 2 TB.
If you have a CPU that support 24 lanes, like most CPUs, than there is only room left for 12 lanes with 3 NvME drives (12 lanes). That explains why the 16 lane PCI-e slot is deactived. I'm not sure where to find that specifics in Windows, maybe an external software can show it like CPU-z.

      I can have
      GPU 16 lane PCIE 5
      M.2
      M.2
      16 lane PCIE 5

      or
      GPU 16 lane PCIE 5
      M.2
      M.2
      M.2

These would seem to add up to more than 24 in either case.

CPU is AMD Ryzen 5 9600X.

There is a difference between CPU lanes (24 lanes) and chipset lanes (20 lanes?) . CPU can handle the Graphics and 2 NvME drives: 16+8=24. The rest is for the chipset. I think this is how it works but I'm not an expert.

Think it's time to put my Win10 computer in the closet and get rid of my old Win7 computer from 2011 or whatever it was. A Smilodon case. I thought my current cases were heavy but this Smilodon takes the cake. Getting it out of the closet was no joke. Getting weaker in my old age.

I will post a picture of it to show its fold-open sides. I love this design. Like the old tower Macs.

Time to remove its hard drive and then somehow get this beast down the stairs and into my car. Not sure whether to leave it by the dumpster area, or lug it all the way to the county hazardous waste/recycling facility, whose very limited hours make that a real pain. Given how redneck this area is they would probably just put it in the landfill anyway. I remember a few years ago I was separating my garbage into trash in white bags and recyclables in clear bags. I followed the valet trash guy to the dumpster one night and he was just throwing everything in there. They had stopped doing recycling like 10 months before and never told all the tenants. I was separating all that stuff and buying clear bags for nothing.

Dirk-Tooth is what they called this version of the Smilodon, I had a previous one too for the computer before that.

Look at all the PCIE slots you used to get, along with the GPU one.

chuft I tried to do a reply quote but it doesn't seem to be working right now. Hmmmm.

Anyway "Look at all the PCIE slots you used to get, along with the GPU one."

Yeah, more modern day motherboards have the bare minimum expansion. Don't need
an external audio card anymore since the onboard ones are pretty good in comparison
                nowadays.

My mother board only has two PCI PCIe 16x slots. One tied directly to the CPU and the
other to the chipset. And 2 PCIe x1 slots. Those are for the more modern peripherals.
Such as sound blaster cards only use that PCIe x1 slot.

Ah there we go. Reply quote working again.

I've been using Sound Blaster since the mid 90s.
For the EAX (Extended DirectSound3D by adding advanced environmental effects)
Added a whole new debt of audio to certain games that used it. Slowly to be replaced by the DirectX system.
                    Specifically that DirectSound3D.

This was the last audio card I bought and still have. That's 20 years old now.

I stopped using it because it doesn't have digital output. It's all analog. So, when I began
using the Desktop to run movies for the home theater, it was easier to use the onboard
Optical digital out to take full advantage of DTS and Dolby.

I doubt the strategy and isometric RPG games I like would use any fancy sound effects. I assume you need headphones for it too.

Got to 1:58 when EAX is turned off. EAX was giving the sound as if the characters are in that room. That's the idea behind EAX.

LOL why did you post a 2.5 minute video with 20 seconds at the end that is relevant.

I couldn't remember which video I had a good example of EAX but found it again

Go to 14:38. It's a demo of how EAX is applied also to your voice while
playing multiplayer sessions. Each environment has it's own unique
sound characteristic as it would in real life. Instead of just a flat sound.
Be it an empty room or a room full of furniture. A hallway. Outdoors. In wooded area. Etc... Etc....

It's more than just an echo. It's replicating real life environments.

                              Another good example

Start at 10:23. Samples game with EAX on and Off.

I'm used to the better environmental audio since that's how I always
played the games back in the day. I'd know right away if I forgot to turn the
                              EAX option on.
