HOOFDDORP - The yellow colored game icon Pac-Man was originally mainly appeal to women. That reports the creator of the character, Toru Iwatani.
In the book Replay - The History of Video Games, which appears on the market by the end of May, Iwatani speaks with author Tristan Donovan about Pac-Man. Pac-Man had to be a very cute character.
"By making an adorable character we mainly hoped that women would like the game," said Iwatani. "Most arcade games were violent and then focused on male players, so in the arcade rooms mainly men were playing the games."
By making a game that would arouse interest in women, they wanted to make the arcade rooms a habitat where young couples were able to go on a date.
Cakes and desserts
"When I tried to imagine what women would find a nice game, I thought immediately about women who eat cakes and desserts," says Iwatani. "I began to search for the keyword 'food' and came out on a pizza with one missing piece, which I got an idea for the character."
