Buildings have front and backyard fire escapes. But yeah they are actually a life saver when a fire happens.
So common place here you don't even pay attention to them they become part of the scenery.

A fire escape means an old building. New ones don't have them, they have firewalled internal stairwells, sprinklers, fire detectors etc.
