Computer talk OS Windows Linux MAC

    Software

5:41 About time. I never understood why Windows gaming was still putting the majority of the burden on CPU than the GPU.
Windows Direct Storage 2.0 seems to tackle that issue. Hmmm, where's 1.0. Have to go look. Might be in the 23h2.
I'm still waiting for those updates still stuck on 22h2.

Also Sudo more copying Linux. At least come up with a unique name.

Maybe I'll keep sticking with Windows 11 22h2

2:08 so it is a confirmation if you strip the Recall from the Windows install,
you won't get the updated File Explorer as well.

    Recall on every PC

This is what I get when I run that powershell command

    PS C:\Windows\system32> DISM /Online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:Recall

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.22621.2792

    Image Version: 10.0.22621.4317

    Error: 0x800f080c

    Feature name Recall is unknown.
A Windows feature name was not recognized.
Use the /Get-Features option to find the name of the feature in the image and try the command again.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
    I am Recall free!!!

Good to know. It's probably a feature in 24h2.

Yeah 24h2 + exclusive. Doesn't look fully fleshed out either.

I'm also thinking about switching to Linux (mint) because the snooping with Windows 11 is annoying (forced account, recall function).

Pretty much the sentiment across the board. The upside to Microshaft shenanigans is
it's going to bump Linux up on the market share list. Linux will be seeing boosts in
development that will no doubt exceed Windblows

Yeah, I should have done this thread myself. My brain has been on sleep mode lately. 😄

When I was using POP OS, I was able to install Gothic 2 pc game from 2002 and got it running with no issues and
        it ran fine.

Most steam games with proton too. Just have to install Wine on the linux first. I really only need
the Windows for the Adobe Suite but I've been too lazy in getting around to all that.
Setting up a VM (Virtual Machine) on Linux and installing Windows and adobe suite on that.

I'm really liking this one so I'll probably be doing that Linux distro.
        It so much like windows.

Oh and Linux has been gaining market share in the OS market.
With Microsoft and its shenanigans getting people mad.

Zorin Pro version is listed as $47.99

Wouldn't a virtual machine running Windows require....Windows? With its cost and its nasty features like Recall?

With the VM, I can use whatever windows version. Staying clear of anything recall.
Won't be connected to internet anyway. I can disable the virtual Ethernet ports.

That's the other one I forgot for gaming. Lutris (open gaming platform).
How could I forget that. I think it was Lutris I had gotten Gothic 2 to run under.

        Gaming on Linux using ZorinOS
He brings up Pop OS as a comparison which was the Linux distro I had been using.
I've used this guys video before for something. He's the one with the craft beer heh
        Craft Computing

Oh the craft beer review is at 12:25

And this feature in the below video is pretty cool. I was trying to remember what video I saw that in.
Anyway, when you switch to dark mode it also changes the desktop image to night time.

8:53 the change to dark mode

It is a year old though. A lot of things have been ironed out.
I'm going to do the laptop during the weekend and I'll use that
to try out the different distros. Pop OS again and Zorin as time goes on.
Since it has the Windows 10 and there's only a year left for that.
Might as well start getting use to Linux and see what's changed since
          last using it.

Your best bet with unsupported Windows is use a VM and disable the virtual Ethernet port
so it doesn't touch the internet if you want to use it for anything other than that. There
are no security updates anymore. Windows 10 is up for that next year. Without those security
updates, you'll be prone to any new exploits hackers keep discovering.

So when you are using Linux, are you using the GUI? I get the impression you really can't do much without having to get into all the command line stuff. They certainly do in those videos.

I DID IT. I FOUND A WORKING WINDOWS 7 ISO. A WORKING VM APP FOR MAC OS 13. AND I AM CURRENTLY SETTING UP. WINDOWS. 7. IN A VM.

I haven't used Windows 7 since the lockdown, so this is gonna be pretty nostalgia.

But don't these Steam games require connection to the Internet, at least for updates

They are playable on Linux via Steam's Proton.
99% of Steam games now. And for non Steam games Wine/Lutris

The only issue right now really with games are the MMOS and Online games
that have the Anti-Cheat. They haven't been able to get a work around for that yet.
The Anti-Cheats embeds itself into the Windows kernel from what I've read and heard.

Here's a sample of installing the Gog version of Icewind Dale II on Linux using Lutris.
With a little gameplay at the end of the video.

Another video from a year ago. I remember some of those steps for installing Gothic II.

Majority of the the time it's just like Windows installing things.
Depending on which distro of Linux you use. There are Distros
I do believe that are still low level. They have a desktop but you
still do most of the stuff in the command line. For the elitists.
Pop_OS, Zorin and the others like it, focus on the GUI rather than the command line.

If enough people leave for Linux maybe they will hear the message and remove Recall. Especially if there is a security incident involving it. Or they get caught siphoning the contents of your AI-analyzed screenshots.
            Working...
