Prior to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, broadcasters in the US were limited in how many radio stations they could own. Since 1996 a few conglomerates own the vast majority of FM radio stations, which is how you end up hearing the same handful of songs every time you turn on the radio.
Recently my favorite listener supported radio station from my home town started broadcasting on a repeater where I now live. The FM channel they took over was previously used by a pirate radio station which played hard EDM, followed by a commercial station which tried and failed to imitate the pirate station. I'm thrilled to have an independent station to listen to again. Every time I tune in I hear stuff I've never heard before, which is how I found this song.
