Jean Michelle Jarre was pretty good, in the late 70s and early 80s.

Here is a version of one his songs, played live at a concert in China, which has a great synthesizer solo absent in the studio album. This is very unlike most of his stuff, which is more atmospheric, with an early Pink Floyd kind of feel, like the albums above.

That solo synth performance was great, and from the video it seems it was a hand-synth like the way you play a guitar.
I made a cover of the song once and added the solo synth. It's uploaded somewhere, can't remember. It sounds more like the album version though.

All this music from that time reminds me of Andreas Vollenweider and the whole New Age movement....a lot of bad synth music got made and sold as "New Age." I found very little virtue in most of it. But Vollenweider was pretty good, if you like really light music.

Electric harp was his thing. Made you realize how boring it would be to be an actual Elf. It's alright for awhile, but soon you are aching for electric guitar.
