I attend TAFE 15 hours a week and apply for 4 jobs a fortnight, in return for which I get AUD400-odd unemployment benefit a fortnight.

Everybody I know in RL for starters.

A fortnight is a unit of time equal to two weeks: that is 14 days, or literally 14 nights. The term is common in the British Isles and many Commonwealth countries such as Australia where many wages, salaries and most social security benefits are paid on a fortnightly basis. Fortnights are very rarely used in North America.

It's just a very outdated term.

The point of the quote was the sentences after the definition, the ones that say it's a common term in Britain and the Commonwealth. As I said, you only think it's outdated because you're American.

I work as an armed security officer making anywhere from $10-15/hr depending on the job. Almost all my jobs pay $15. Normally, I'm at a bank in a less-than-crime-free part of town ensuring the joint doesn't get robbed. Occasionally I do construction sites, wedding receptions, jewelry stores, patrols, etc. By the end of this month, I will have worked well over 300 hours.

I don't see why pointing out I talk differently to you because I'm Aussie and you're American constitutes picking a fight. It's outdated in the US, OK, but it's everyday language (not to mention used in all Centrelink literature when referring to 2 week payment periods) in Aus.

I also use the word 'mate' to mean good friend, spell 'colour' with a U, call the absorbent thing you put on babies' bottoms a 'nappy', and think 'fanny' means 'vulva'.
