What the heck is "productivity work" ? Surely they don't mean word processing and that kind of crap, you should be able to do that with a CPU from 1997.
Did you ever tell him about my rig being 13 years old (2009 - 2022) before I upgraded everything? Well the CPU, motherboard and memory.
Video cards upgraded and hard drives in between. I'd still be using it if the motherboard didn't fail. Though it picked a good
time at least the generation I upgraded was rated pretty good overall.

That productivity crap is mostly aimed at online content creators/game streamer now.

Well it is $500 and, for example, the Ryzan 5 9600X is only $210. The 9600X is also 65 watts instead of 120.

You like intense graphics in those first person games so it might make sense for you, but the games I play do not tend to be that demanding.

I am also not sure why the CPU is being rated for gaming, I would think that would be a GPU thing.

No, I don't keep track of your computers lol.

It's weird to me that people upgrade things. I generally build a computer and use it till I build the next one. I think only once have I replaced a component, I upgraded a graphics card once on my last computer, but I had that one from...2011? to late 2019.

        Ah thanks.

You are planning on an AMD graphics card? All I ever hear these days is Nvidia, I wasn't sure if AMD was even in the running for GPUs anymore. They certainly are absent from news about processors for AIs. I know they are killing it in CPUs though.

It's basically a marketing thing this whole 3D-V cache. It's all about the L3 cache. I think all modern CPUs
have an L3 cache. For example the Ryzen 9600x has an L3 cache of 32mb while the 9800X3D has 96mb.
That's quite a bit more. That extra size of the L3 cache just doesn't benefit games but video editing and such.

You still need that CPU for the game's logic code and physics. GPU stores the textures and is busy rendering the frames.

no point in saying this because chuft has ignored me.. but if you build your own computer would u include a DVD/CD drive?

I wonder why Chuft ignored you (scrolls back into the thread). But most people would say yes if they chose to.

                anyways, i think when/if i built a PC i'd have a CD/DVD drive because they're still fairly useful
also what OS do you use? just curious

OS? Apple Mac not sure what one but it’s laptop. If it’s school, windows.

I always include an optical drive because I have a large CD collection and like to be able to rip songs onto the computer. Also have a number of old games that came on CD.

Probably going to use the Fractal Design Define 7 case which has an optical bay. I love my Fractal Design Define R5 which I am using now. The removable dust filters are great.

My old builds used to have two optical drives, for copying DVDs but no point to it now that the by-mail Netflix (or DVD.com or whatever they spun it off as) DVD rental service no longer exists. That was the best service, 2 movies a month and their selection was gigantic compared to any streaming service.

I don't think I play any games with physics.

Yeah, I’m not into technology. I hate coding in general. I just use these to edit videos (YouTube and school if I do film as a class. Though I might do film TAFE if I don’t get a traineeship or if general film doesn’t have enough people anyways back on topic). To watch videos and research that’s all.

The larger L3 cache seems to benefit games with Ray Tracing.

Take for example my CPU Ryzen 9 5900X which was released in 2020 compared to the later CPU Ryzen 7 7800X3D release 2023.
Both perform nearly identical in most games except when you begin turning on and upping the Ray tracing.
The 5900x starts to struggle compared to the 7800x3D. There's a reason why the 5900x can nearly keep up with the 7800x3D.
The 5900x has an L3 cache of 64mb (most chips usually have 32mb for example the Ryzen 5 9600x). The 7800x3D has L3 96mb which seems to be the size of all the
CPUs with the 3D-V cache label. Those extra 32 mbs for prefetching code seems to be the key. The 64mb L3 cache is why the Ryzen 9 5900x makes a really good overall general performer for the price.

For those those unfamiliar of what those L1, L2 and L3 cpu cache's are, they are basically fast memory storage for code. A lot faster
than having the CPU fetch stored code from the motherboard ram which takes a lot longer. The L caches are manufactured on the same die as the CPU.
So when you load up a program, the very next code to run is stored in the L1 cache which is the fastest. L2 cache is used for
storing more code and same with L3.

From what I've read about that newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D, there's an architecture change as well. Instead of stacking
the L3 cache on top of the die, it is now under it. Apparently, the 7800x3D was suffering from thermal issues because
it was stacked on top of the die and all the heat being generated by the CPU was going through that cache as well as its
own generated heat. Seems they solved that issue with the newer chip design.

I always do. I have so many physical games on CD and DVD. I also get certain models that you can rip Blu Rays from easily to store on hard drives. Not all models can do that.
