My AMD software likes to update itself at random when i am doing things like typing here, and every time it results in a black screen and I have to reset the computer.

Microsoft gives EU users free access to its extra year of Windows 10 security updates

This will give remaining Windows 10 users in this area another year to think about moving to Windows 11 or to find another operating system.
Following complaints from Euroconsumers, an international consumer advocacy organisation, Microsoft has revised its Windows 10 end-of-life schedule, providing EEA users with free security updates until October 14, 2026. These include all 27 member states of the European Union, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The UK isnโt part of this deal, unfortunately.
In a statement to Windows Central, Microsoft said: โIn the European Economic Area, weโre making updates to the enrolment process to ensure it meets local expectations and delivers a secure, streamlined experience. Our goal is to support customers and provide them with options as they transition to Windows 11, with uninterrupted access to critical security updates.โ
Prior to this announcement, the only ways to acquire this extension of support was via a $30 payment, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Reward points, or syncing your PC settings to the cloud. This raised concerns regarding compliance with obligations under Article 6 of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Subsequently, this new option only requires periodic Microsoft account authentication โ every 60 days โ to continue receiving updates.
Even so, Euroconsumers indicates that such short-term measures arenโt sufficient for products with as wide a consumer base as Windows 10, and that they do not align with the EUโs broader sustainability goals. According to the advocacy group, an estimated 850M devices cannot make the jump to Windows 11, further citing that 22% of consumers remain on older but still functional Windows 10 devices and laptops from 2017 or earlier.
For now, Euroconsumers is in talks with Microsoft to find a way to further extend device protection beyond this date. Until then, EEA users can enjoy an extra year of protection for free.

And it's still the same with Linux. You're still better off with running Windows and apps, such as Office or Adobe suite,
either in a VM or just have two computers one with Windows (for apps) and one with Linux (for games). Games you are fine in Linux.
Good example of that is that the video host installed Adobe Auditions on Linux using Wine 11:09

The hell. I am sitting here having my morning genmaicha looking to see if the liquor stores have the Christmas Ale yet and suddenly I hear the computer fan. I run HWInfo
Core 4 went to over 80 degrees C. By the time I could launch Task Manager to see what process was using so much power the temps were already dropping back to the 50's and all I saw was Firefox 13%.
This is not the first time this has happened although last time it was while trying to run 4K Video Downloader+ after a bad update. This was just a random CPU spike. I wonder if it was some Win11 foolishness.

So this week I got this email on each of my ISP email accounts. They often all get identical phishing/spam/malware attempt emails.
"Update your password before Nov 11" - urgency, typical of phishing emails
A link to a site to reset my password - the address shown in the text does not match the URL underneath, which is a really weird one - typical of phishing and malware emails
The address it came from is not my provider's domain, but some other domain that sounds similar.
I figured it was fake. I was going to ignore it like so many other phishing emails I delete, but I have seen legitimate emails before that looked just like phishing emails so I decided to look into it rather than risk losing access to my email on Tuesday. I checked the sender's domain. My ISP owns it. It could still be spoofed though, so I called the company. Turns out it was legit.
I tried it on my least important account and promptly lost the ability to get email on it. The reps just try to get you to use webmail because they don't understand things like POP and IMAP. Well after days of searching for information, trying things etc I eventually figured out I had to use a preposterous-sounding server name (it has the name of my original ISP which was bought out 9 years ago) and switch the account to IMAP. It doesn't say it anywhere but they are apparently dropping support for POP.
So I have been going through the hassles of deleting my old accounts and setting them up again as IMAP. This is a big deal, not so much on the phone, but on the PC these accounts have 10 years of saved emails each that would disappear. So I have to create local folders in Thunderbird for each one to copy the emails to (and will have to continue to) and then copy the emails there and then create a new IMAP account to replace the POP one and eventually delete the POP one. Since I have over 10,000 emails in these accounts I did not want to try to copy all that so under time pressure I am going through and deleting mass amounts of spams and other emails in there that I no longer need before copying them. Then I will have to change the passwords and set up the IMAP accounts.
Relaxing Veteran's Day weekend let me tell you. Had configuration problems in Thunderbird setting up the first IMAP account, took awhile to troubleshoot all the problems.l i t t l es t e p h e r sComment

If I get anything like for email password breach, I go right to my accounts (no intermediaries) and just change passwords. Just in case.
I change them every now again anyway. Same with Pin numbers on debit cards.
I got a text on my phone Thursday. Some random phone number with the tired old "Notification of Payment 490.27$ received from
your AppleStore. Please call at (web url not even a phone number) if unauthorized." Usually it's some bogus Amazon order.
Silly Indian scam call centers. First off the $ sign goes in front of the number.
Second, I don't even use AppleStore. Can't believe their still using this old scam method.
