It's been my opinion for a while already. If someone could have a chance to act as a rival to Youtube, it would be them. They already have the brand recognition and a working website format/video player for it.

Yeah with the Adpocolypse 2 happening it wouldn't be a bad move, however I don't think there'd be that many good advertisers supporting the platform.

I'm going to a YouTube Study. Just received a personal invite from someone from Google, see what they have to tell us, I'm curious.

            Dates: 11 September 2019
            Length: 75 minutes
Location: In-person - Google Amsterdam office

I don't even live in the USA so why should I obey the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and/or other US laws? It's not the users problem. If Google just stop collecting personal information from everyone, that would solve it all.

The Rule applies to operators of commercial websites and online services (including mobile apps) directed to children under 13 that collect, use, or disclose personal information from children.
Foreign-based websites and online services must comply with COPPA if they are directed to children in the United States, or if they knowingly collect personal information from children in the U.S. The law’s definition of “operator” includes foreign-based websites and online services that are involved in commerce in the United States or its territories. As a related matter, U.S.-based sites and services that collect information from foreign children also are subject to COPPA.

You shouldn't have to, but are required to due to it being a US-based company.

I was around when Youtube first started and everything on there was a labor of love made because someone wanted to make it. Now it seems everyone expects to make six figure income from making amateur videos, as if they were writing professional level scripts for Disney or Netflix.

I am reading a thread on Reddit in disbelief. Someone who is paying for Youtube premium still sees those in-video promos and is upset, since he is paying Netflix prices for no ads, and still seeing ads, and all the millennials are piling on him saying the content creators deserve a living wage etc as if they were employees with a boss and regular hours and responsibilities when of course they are no such thing. I find it bizarre.

When did this whole monetization thing start anyway? It certainly wasn't like that at the beginning. I never heard the term "youtuber" until 2017 or so. When did video makers go from "labor of love"/"hobby" to "I want to get paid for this and will put ads right into my videos" ?

It started when Google acquired Youtube. They started with ads first then later the partner program/monetization.
This was before 2010 I believe. 2011-2016 was the golden age of content creation even with ads and monetization.
Now for some reason content creators are expected to have expensive setups like mics and cameras and a studio.
up to 2016 everyone was still doing the videos from their bedroom, computer room.

Boy do I remember those 240p days heh. Looking for quality Lazytown clips.

Yeah those in video sponsor ads are rather ridiculous. I thought Netflix has a tiered pay.
Lowest price you still get some ads. The more expensive you get none. I'm pretty sure
that Hulu started doing that around 2015 or 2016. I didn't use Hulu but my Nephew did
and I remember him telling me about that.

You know what's even worse. Twitch. Gamers expecting you to pay to watch them gaming.

LOL the mods removed that post (which had over 250 thumbs) complaining about in-video ads still being shown to subscribers to Youtube premium.

Reddit has the worst censorship problem I've ever seen, although Boardgamegeek is close. That said I don't use Facebook or Twitter so I don't know how bad it is there.

I've had a large number of my posts censored from Reddit by bots, not even a human doing it, and the bots were removing legitimate posts with no problems. I remember posting "Why don't probiotics colonize the gut? Why do you have to keep taking them if they are bacteria?" A bot removed it as a "hypothetical question" because of the "why don't" phrasing.

Yeah, I've heard Reddit has become something else with the censorship.
Brings me back to that claiming yourself a platform for that section 230 protection but being anything but - Reddit is a social media platform
It's time to strip them all of that section 230 protection and moved them into the proper category of Publisher.
Enough with that claiming one thing but really being the other.

Say what you will about 4chan but to be honest they are a true free speech platform.
Sure that comes with negatives as well but I'll take that over those liars who claim
                                they are free speech "platforms".
